John Bergquist,
Composer-in-Residence

Originally from Salt Lake City, John Bergquist is a conductor, composer, baritone, pianist, and educator who relocated to California in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. He currently serves as Director of Music and Technology at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Studio City and as Associate Artistic Director of the San Fernando Valley Master Chorale (SFVMC) and in 2026 became the new Composer-in-Residence. John also serves as staff accompanist for the San Fernando Valley Youth Chorus and is Chair of Conducting for The Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles.

As a vocalist, he performs with Tonality, Pacific Chorale, Terpsichor, The Other Reindeer, and the Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles. In addition to his performance work, John has composed numerous choral works for a variety of ensembles throughout Southern California. He earned both his Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education and Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Utah.
